The Devon Rex cat did not live among humans until 1960. The father of the Devon Rex cat was a wild, curly-furry cat that lived near abandoned mines near Deveonshire, England. He mated with a female that did not belong to any breed, resulting in a lot of kittens living in the garden of breeder Beryk Cox. One of the kittens, a black-brown cat named Kirlee, inherited the curly fur from his father, but its length was shorter.
1.
Animal breeders believe that the curly-haired cat and the female with whom it mated had a blood relationship, as the Devon Rex gene, which gives curly fur, is recessive and must be present in both parents to appear in offspring.
2.
At first, Kirlee was considered to be a Cornish Rex cat, but subsequent matings between Kirlee and cats of this breed resulted in straight-fried chicks. This was proof that Kirlee was part of a newly discovered race. The two races, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex, have nothing to do with each other.
3.
The Devon Rex cat has a unique appearance. Big eyes, a short nose, prominent cheekbones, curly mustache, and big, bent ears make Devon Rex look like a leprechaun. The feline is of medium size, even small, the females weighing 2-3 kg when they reach maturity, and the males 3-4 kilograms. Although it looks like a fragile cat, it is robust, agile and covered with muscle mass.
4.
A unique feature of the Devon Rex cat is the curly fur, which varies from one individual to another. Devon Rex cats have short, wavy fur, either falling in waves or forming small knots. The fur is soft and fluffy, but there are also some rebellious threads that spoil its uniformity. These rebellious threads are softer than the rest of the fur.
5.
The fur of the Devon Rex kittens grows several times during childhood, but the curly appearance is maintained even as an adult.
6.
The Devon Rex cat has fur in a variety of colors, presenting certain patterns such as: sharp, solid, erased, turtle shell, bi-color, harlequin, but also striped. Regardless of the colors of the fur, if the other characteristics are reached, the cat is recognized as part of the Devon Rex breed.
7.
The Devnon Rex cat needs little "maintenance". Occasionally, large ears should be cleaned. Otherwise, a simple bath and nail trimming are the only care activities the Devon Rex cat needs.
8.
Although the body temperature of this cat is the same as that of the other cats, the Devon Rex cat seems warmer to the touch, due to the shorter and rarer fur. For the same reason, these cats are always looking for warmth, they live better if they do not have access outside at all.
9.
The character of the Devon Rex cat is truly remarkable. She is alert and active and very curious about the things around her. They like to be surrounded by people and bring the objects they throw. She is also very agile and very inquisitive, wanting to explore every corner of the house.
10.
Devon Rex loves dogs and follows the people around her in every room, asking her to be involved in any activity. She prefers to sit on her shoulders, or in the arms of her masters, and if they are left out of an activity they will protest vehemently. Feline is intelligent, obsessively affectionate, loyal and fun.
