coronavirus-mortality-was-significantly-higher-than-expected

Six months ago, no one knew about the existence of coronavirus. Now the virus has spread to almost all countries, infecting more than 3 million people - and these are only those cases that are known. How this epidemic will affect the economies of countries, as well as the mental and physical health of people, is described in a new issue.

Many media personalities, politicians and ordinary Internet users claim that the panic around COVID-19 is bloated out of nothing, and the virus itself is no more dangerous than ordinary flu.

The supposedly frightening number of people who died from the infection is very high, and those who died of natural causes and old age are included in it. And coronavirus, like seasonal flu, kills the time required to estimate the case fatality ratio of Influenza using only the tip of an iceberg: joint estimation of the virulence and the transmission potential "only" about 0.1 percent of infected. So, this is not so.

A new study, an empirical estimate of the infection fatality rate of COVID-19 from the first Italian outbreak, published by specialists from Harvard and the US Bureau of Economic Research, has more accurately established the mortality rate of COVID-19 using Italy as an example. It was established that the official number of deaths from coronavirus is not exaggerated, but rather underestimated by COVID-19 in Italy: An analysis of death registry data almost doubled, because many patients did not die in hospitals, but at home.

After reviewing the available data, researchers Gianluca Rinaldi and Matteo Paradisi came to the conclusion that an empirical estimate of the infection fatality rate of COVID-19 from the first Italian outbreak shows that the mortality rate of COVID-19 is 1.29%. For young people, it is small - 0.05%, but for older people the risk is already 4.25%.

austrians-stormed-shopping-malls-spaniards-filled-the-streets-after-49-days-of-isolation

The countdown has begun until the great release, announced by the authorities on May 15.  Plans are being made about the operation of restaurants, hotels, rules have been imposed for the reopening of hair salons.  The somewhat normal life is enjoyed by the citizens of other European states. The images of Austrians rushing into shops, or those of Spaniards enjoying sports and walks are as optimistic as they are disturbing.  Authorities warn that the danger has not passed.

Since 1 May, Austria has further relaxed measures imposed in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and allowed the reopening of hairdressing salons, larger shops and shopping malls.  And the images speak for themselves about the impatience with which people have been waiting for this relaxation. Queues formed in front of clothing stores, sidewalks were crowded, and parks and markets became promenades again.

Austria will further relax its containment measures from May 15, when restaurants and cafes will be reopened and religious services will be able to resume, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz was quoted as saying by Reuters on Tuesday.

Relaxation also is in Spain, one of the hardest-hit countries in terms of deaths due to the new coronavirus.  Over the weekend, in Barcelona, runners and cyclists littered the streets near the beach, where surfers enjoyed the waves.

In Madrid, cyclists and young people on skateboards walked the boulevards, crossing police lanes trying to prevent congestion.  Spain was one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic and imposed strict containment measures in March. Sports and recreational activities have been banned in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus.

massive-increase-in-emergency-calls-after-trump-urges-americans-to-inject-disinfectant-against-covid-19

The Maryland (northeast) emergency line and the Toxicological Information Center (anti-poison) in New York saw a surge in calls due to disinfectant injection after President Donald Trump presented it as a possible "remedy" on Thursday.  "Against Covid-19, writes the American press.

Hundreds of people called Maryland to learn more about the benefits of using a disinfectant, such as bleach or household detergents.  These phone calls prompted authorities to issue an emergency alert and post a message on Twitter warning that "under no circumstances should a disinfectant be administered to the body by injection or otherwise."

In New York, health officials said they had received an "unusually large" number of people contacting them, according to White House residents.

The anti-poison centre in New York, a sub-agency of the city's Department of Health, received 30 calls Thursday night through Friday afternoon, twice as many as usual.

None of the people who contacted the centre died and did not need hospitalization.

Donald Trump said he was sarcastic when he said he urged Americans to inject disinfectant

"I find that the disinfectant removes the virus in a minute.  Wouldn't there be a way to do this by injecting it inside or something like that?  As you can see, he's getting into his lungs, he's doing a lot of things there, so it would be interesting to see that happen, "Trump said Thursday at a White House briefing.

The American president returned on Friday on the statements he made.  Trump said he was "sarcastic" when he called for disinfectant injections.  But he said just minutes later that it was a serious idea and asked government experts to study it.

why-a-mask-with-a-valve-is-not-suitable-for-protection-against-coronavirus

Such protective equipment can make you dangerous to others.

Sometimes protective fabric masks are equipped with a special valve.  In this case, the mask works like this - you inhale air through filters and exhale it through a one-way valve.  Thus, warm air comes out from under the mask faster, it becomes easier to breathe, the mask is easier to wear, and glasses will not fog up.

We put on masks for two reasons.  Firstly, we hope that they will protect us from COVID-19 (however, disputes are still underway regarding the effectiveness of masks).  Secondly, more importantly, the mask does not allow us to infect others, if we are sick and do not suspect it.

The valve allows free passage of air as it exhales.  This means that an infected person will spread particles of the virus around him as if he weren’t wearing any protection at all.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend using masks and respirators with valves to prevent infection with this disease.

Such protection can be worn in conditions of smog, dust and smoke - for example, at a construction site or factory where harmful particles are floating in the air.  But the mask with the valve will not stop the spread of the virus.
