The idea for the award was proposed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the mid-1950s, when it began screening candidates from the recording industry to claim a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1957, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS; or The Recording Academy) was created to award the future award. In 1958, this organization established a prize called the Grammy (from the word "gramophone"). The prize is a small gilded gramophone.

The first Grammy ceremony took place on May 4, 1959, it was held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. Awards have been presented in over 20 nominations for musical achievement in 1958.
