Using the palm instead of the bank card: Amazon unveiled on Tuesday the contactless biometric technology that allows customers to pay in the store with a simple movement of the hand. Bemorepanda is impressed!
The Amazon One service will first be available at two of Amazon's Amazon Go convenience stores, where the company is headquartered.
Entrepreneur Jeff Bezos' group plans to add the technology to other grocery stores in the United States (Chicago, San Francisco and New York, among other outlets in Seattle) and sell it to third-party stores, but has not yet announced the name of a potential partner.
The top grocery chain Whole Foods Market, purchased in 2017 by Amazon, could also be equipped in the future with this new payment system.
"In most retail outlets, Amazon One could become an alternative payment method or a loyalty card option with a home device alongside the traditional payment system," Dilip Kumar, vice president for Amazon's retail and technology.
Kumar also informed that Amazon One could be used for public entrance in stadiums or for employees' access to the workplace.
Described by Amazon as "fast, reliable and secure", the technology uses custom algorithms based on a hand image to create a "unique palm signature".
Customers wishing to register must have a mobile phone number and a bank card, but are not required to have an Amazon account.
"We take data security and privacy seriously, and all sensitive data is treated in accordance with our many-year-old policies," the company said.
The online commerce giant insists in particular that the images of the palms will not be stored on Amazon One devices, but encrypted and sent to secure ‘cloud’ spaces.
Users will also have the option to request the deletion of data associated with Amazon One directly from the device or through a dedicated website.
